Dotun's new publication available online


Dotun Olowoporoku, Enda Hayes, James Longhurst, and Graham Parkhurst (2012) The rhetoric and realities of integrating air quality into the local transport planning process in English local authorities. Journal of Environmental Management 101 (2012). pp. 23 -32.

This paper highlights the policy and practice of integrating air quality management into transport planning. It provided evidence of the deprioritisation of air quality management within the LTP2 process.  The paper is available online, at http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jenvman.2012.01.017

Dotun is the recipient of the 2011 Ian McCrae Travel Award


 Dotun recently won the Ian McCrae Travel Award from The Institute of Air Quality Management (IAQM). This award acts as a memorial to Ian McCrae who was an internationally-respected air quality scientist and IAQM committee member. Dotun was formally presented with the award at the annual general meeting of the institute on 17 November 2011 in London. The award will enable Dotun to present his current research at the Urban Environmental Pollution 2012. The conference, organised by Elsevier, will be held in June 2012 at Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Jim and Dotun to present at the Seminar on Air Quality and Carbon Management in Nigeria

Drawing on the experience and expertise of AQMRC in undertaking similar framework for the South African Government, this seminar, hosted by the Faculty of Science, University of Lagos, will facilitate discussion towards a shift in policy, practice and governance of air quality and carbon management in Nigeria. It will also build on the existing strategic partnership between the University of Lagos and the University of the West of England, Bristol in creating more research collaborations and funding opportunities towards environmental policy development.

Dotun’s PhD graduation ceremony


Congratulations to Dotun Olowoporoku who received his PhD award at the UWE 2010 Award Ceremony on 17th November 2010 held in Bristol Cathedral. Dotun was also the 2010 recipient of the Dr Nurul Leksmono Prize for the most outstanding international PhD thesis on the subject of air quality, carbon management or environmental management. The Prize was instituted for UWE international students in memory of former AQMRC Research Fellow, the late Dr Nurul Leksmono. IIT Visit


AQMRC were delighted to welcome esteemed colleagues from the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi and Madras. Professor Mukesh Khare (IITD) and Dr Shiva Nagendra (IITM) met with AQMRC’s Jo Barnes and Dr Dotun Olowoporoku (pictured) to discuss development of an air quality management framework for cities in India. Professor Longhurst said “This is a very exciting opportunity to progress our links with colleagues in India and to share our experiences gained of managing air quality in the UK.” This project builds upon a long standing cooperation between AQMRC and IITD and will see AQMRC staff attend a seminar in Delhi in February 2011.

Congratulations to Dr Dotun Olowoporoku

Dotun has successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled ‘Delivering improved air quality through the local transport plan process in English local government’ His thesis was examined by Professor John Murlis, UCL, and Dr Kiron Chatterjee, UWE, and the examiners have recommended the award of PhD subject to minor amendments.

Very many congratulations to Dotun on an excellent defence of his thesis. Congratulations also to the supervisors, Dr Enda Hayes and Professor Graham Parkhurst, and the director of studies, Jim Longhurst, on a successful supervision to completion.

Dotun presents research in Brussels

Dotun will be giving a presentation on "Managing local traffic-related air pollution in England" at the on Polis Conference 2009 in Brussels (10th and 11th of December). He will be presenting key findings from his recently concluded PhD research on the integration of air quality management into the second round of local transport planning (LTP2) process.

AQMRC at Environmental Protection UK Spring Workshop


The AQMRC team attended the Environmental Protection UK Spring Workshop in beautiful Northamptonshire last week and contributed a couple of presentations and a workshop to the proceedings. Dotun struck a chord amongst the delegates with his presentation on 'Air Quality and the Local Transport Planning Process', while Jo addressed the 'Capacity development and capability enhancement opportunities for air quality and carbon management professionals', introducing the Masters level CPD training course that is currently being developed by the AQMRC, and Tim gave an animated introduction to the LAQM process in his 'LAQM for beginners' workshop (pictured). Jo, Tim and Dotun to speak at Environmental Protection UK Spring Workshop

AQMRC will be represented by three speakers at the forthcoming Environmental Protection UK 2009 Spring workshop taking place on 2nd to 3rd April themed; Beyond the Limits: From Assessment to Action.

Jo will be speaking on "Training for Air Quality Professionals". She will be discussing the HERDA-SW project, which she is currently managing, in which AQMRC are currently developing a series of air quality and carbon management modules for air quality professionals in the South West Region (For more on the HERDA-SW project click here).

Tim will be sharing his vast knowledge on the LAQM process and a review of helpful information and where to get it in a friendly workshop setting to delegates who are new to the process.

Dotun will be speaking on "Air Quality and Local Transport Plan". He will be summarising the key findings from his 3-year research on the subject, and provide recommendations on how to keep air quality at the top of the agenda in the proposed LTP3 and improving engagement between the environmental health officers and transport planners. Dotun concludes case study interviews

Dotun just concluded the case study interviews on the integration of air quality into the Local Transport Plan process at various local authorities in England. This involves visits to West Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Greater Nottingham, Bedford, Devon, Leicestershire and Hampshire. He appreciates the support and encouragement he received from all the participants.

Air Pollution 2008 Skiathos, Greece, 22-24 September

The 16th annual conference on Air Pollution Modelling, Monitoring and Management opens on Monday 22nd September. Organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology and co-chaired by Professor Carlos Brebbia of WIT and AQMRC's Professor Jim Longhurst, this conference will debate contemporary issues in the science and management of air pollution. AQMRC will be well represented at the conference with research students Dotun Olowoporoku , Simon Baldwin and Mofoluso Fagbeja presenting at their first international conference. Dotun to present at TPM 2008

Dotun had his paper accepted by Planning and Transport, Research and Computation (PTRC) the organisers of the 6th annual Transport Practitioners Meeting (TPM) 2008 in Reading. Dotun will be speaking at the conference on 16th of July, 2008 to a broad range of transport engineers, planners and urban transport designers on some of the findings of his research.

Air Pollution 2008

The deadline for paper submissions to the Wessex Institute of Technology conference 'Air Pollution 2008' is 21 May 2008. Click here for further information. The 16th annual conference dealing with modelling, monitoring and management of air pollution will be held this year in Skiathos, Greece on 22-24 September and will be co-chaired by Jim Longhurst. AQMRC are submitting several papers for inclusion in the conference proceedings, including submissions from Dotun Olowoporoku and Simon Baldwin related to their PhD research.

PhD researcher Dotun Olowoporoku visits Cornwall Air Quality Forum

Following the successful presentation at the 10th AQMRC and Environment Protection UK Annual Conference held in Bristol on 21 February, 2008. Dotun was invited as a guest speaker at Partnership Board of the Cornwall Air Quality Forum (CAQF) held on 27 March. The meeting is comprised of the five Cornish district councils, Cornwall County Council and Cornwall College. At the meeting, he gave a talk on ‘Delivering Air Quality Objectives through the Local Transport Plan’. It provided the opportunity to present the key findings from the first round of questionnaires to a broad range of stakeholders who are responsible for steering the air quality management agenda at the local level.
